Garcia Glen White has been granted a stay of execution by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.  The Court did not immediately release a statement giving the reason for the stay of execution, however, Garcia's lawyers filed an appeal over concerns that he was mentally impaired from crack cocaine use, which is why, allegedly, he waived his right to a lawyer during police questioning, ultimately leading to a confession.  Also in the appeal, his lawyers alleged that DNA evidence suggests another individual was present during the murder.  It is unclear which for which issue the stay was granted.

Garcia Glen White is scheduled to be executed at 6 pm CST, on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at Walls Unit of the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  Fifty-one-year-old Garcia is convicted of the murder of twin 16-year-olds, Bernette and Annette Edwards, on December 2, 1989, in Houston, Texas.  Garcia also killed their mother, Bonita.  Garcia has spent the last 18 years on Texas’ death row.

Garcia had graduated from high school and went on to play football at Lubbock Christian University, although he dropped out after sustaining a knee injury his first year.  After leaving college, Garcia became addicted to marijuana and crack cocaine.  His lawyers have unsuccessfully attempted to argue that use of those drugs triggered psychotic symptoms.  His family members testified that he was a "different person" while on drugs.  Garcia worked as a fry cook prior to his arrest.

On December 2, 1989, Garcia White went to the home of Bonita Edwards, intending to smoke crack cocaine with her.  White and Bonita got into an argument, which resulted in White stabbing Bonita several times.  Bernette and Annette, Bonita’s twin daughters, came out from their bedroom to see what was happening.  Each was also stabbed several times.  Evidence showed that Bernette was also sexually assaulted.  All three died from their injuries.

White was arrested on July 21, 1995, for the murder of a convenience store clerk that had occurred eight days earlier, on July 13, 1995.  During the police investigation, they received information that White was involved in the Edwards’ murders, in addition to another murder that occurred in November of 1989.  White eventually confessed to the crime and was sentenced to death in 1996.

Please pray for peace and healing for the family of Bonita, Bernette, and Annette Edwards.  Please pray for strength for the family of Garcia White.  Please pray that if Garcia is innocent, the truth will be revealed before he is executed.  Please pray that Garcia will come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already found one.
