Alfonso Sanchez was scheduled to be executed at 7 pm EDT on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the State Correctional Institute Rockview, in Rockview, Pennsylvania. Alfonso was issued a stay of execution by the Buck County Common Pleas Court. Thirty-three-year-old Alfonso is convicted of murdering 27-year-old Liza Diaz at her apartment during the early morning hours of October 17, 2007, in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Alfonso has spent the last 6 years on Pennsylvania’s death row.

On the evening of October 16, 2007, Alfonso Sanchez, along with his two friends, Alex Martinez and Steven Miranda, were drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. Later that night, the three men decided to go to the apartment of Mendez Thomas in order to assault him. Miranda contacted Mendez and arranged for the trio to come over, under the pretext of wanting to buy marijuana.

Around midnight, the trio arrived at the apartment. In addition to Mendez, Lisa Diaz and her two children were also at the apartment, along with another woman, Carmona. Mendez and Sanchez engaged in a physical and verbal altercation, during which Sanchez revealed that he had a gun Mendez began to run towards a bedroom when Sanchez shot him in the head from leg than a foot away. Mendez was killed instantly. Sanchez turned and shot at Lisa in the shoulder, causing her to fall. Sanchez approached Lisa and shot her again in the head, killing her. Sanchez then shot Carmona, who was shielding the children, in the leg. Carmona was able to contact the police and identify the shooter.

Sanchez’s two friends, Martinez and Miranda, surrendered to the police and gave statements which implicated Sanchez as the shooter. Both men also insisted that they had gone to the apartment to purchase marijuana, not to assault anyone. Sanchez was arrested several days later, on October 25, after attempting to flee.

Sanchez was found guilty of two counts of murder in the first-degree and fifteen other charges, including burglary, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime, criminal conspiracy, flight to avoid apprehension, and recklessly endangering another person. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Mendez and sentenced to death for the murder of Lisa.

Sanchez has been granted a new trial, due to the prosecution withholding relevant DNA evidence during his initial trial.

Please pray for peace and healing for the families of Liza Diaz and Mendez Thomas. Please pray for strength for the family of Alfonso Sanchez. Please pray that if Alfonso is innocent, it will be revealed prior to his execution. Please pray that Alfonso will come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already found one.
