Andre Lee Stanton was scheduled to be executed at 7 pm EST, on Friday, January 22, 2016, at the Rockview State Correctional Institute in Rockview, Pennsylvania. His execution has been stayed by the US District Court for the western District of Pennsylvania. Thirty-four-year-old Andre is convicted of the murder of Beverly Yohn on February 25, 2004, in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Andre has spent the last nine years of his life on Pennsylvania’s death row.

Andre was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He allegedly had a violet childhood and lived in a violent household.

Andre Stanton and Beverly Yohn began dating in the spring or summer of 2003. During the fall of 2003, one of Beverly’s friends noticed that she had been injured. In January of 2004, Beverly reported Stanton to the police for physical assault. Beverly also requested a “protection from abuse.” A temporary order was granted on January 27, 2004, with a final order being issued on February 19, 2004.

On February 24, 2004, Stanton spent the evening drinking and talking to a bartender about “his girlfriend.” Stanton told the bartender that he had given his girlfriend a $40,000 house, which he could no longer live in. Stanton also stated that it “will be taken care of.”

During the morning of February 25, 2004, Stanton was observed to be within a close proximity to the home of Beverly’s mother. Beverly, along with her three sons, were at her mother’s home that morning. One of Beverly’s sons, Justin, was outside the house in the vehicle, waiting to be taken to school, when he saw Stanton approach the house.

Stanton signaled to Justin to stay quiet, before entering the rear porch and kicking in the back door. Another son, Jeremey, was sitting in the kitchen when Stanton kicked in the door. Jeremey observed Staton pulling a knife from his jacket and immediately began stabbing Beverly until she fell to the floor. Stanton then fled the house, leaving the knife in Beverly. Beverly was transported to the hospital, where she died later that day.

Stanton admitted to entering the home and stabbing Beverly, but claimed that Beverly charged at him, swinging the knife. Stanton alleged that he entered the home without intent to harm her. He also alleged that he was unaware of the protection from abuse order, believing it had been withdrawn. Stanton was convicted and sentenced to death on June 1, 2006.

In 2012, Stanton was given an execution date, which was stayed to allow him to complete his appeals.

In 2013, Stanton struck his attorney in the face with his handcuffed hands, which were attached to a belt. His attorney was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion. Allegedly, the stress from the incident also later caused a heart attack. Stanton was convicted of assault and sentenced to 5-10 years.

Please pray for peace and healing for the family of Beverly Yohn. Please pray for strength for the family of Andre Stanton. Please pray that if Andre is innocent, lacks the competency to be execution or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be presented prior to his execution. Please pray that Andre may come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already.
