Leeton Thomas, Pennsylvania

Updated: Monday, July 27, 2020

Leeton Jahwanza Thomas a/k/a “Pie” was scheduled to be executed at 7 pm local time on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at the State Correctional Institute Rockview in Rockview, Pennsylvania.  His execution has been stayed. Forty-three-year-old Leeton is convicted of murdering 44-year-old Lisa Scheetz, and her daughter, 16-year-old Hailey, on June 11, 2015, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Leeton has been on death row in Pennsylvania for the last three years.

Leeton Thomas was originally from Jamaica, but resided permanently in the United States as a green card holder. He is the father of four and worked as a home remodeler prior to his arrest.

During the early morning hours on June 11, 2015, Leeton Thomas broke into the apartment where Lisa Scheetz lived with her three daughters, although only two, Hailey and 15-year-old Paige, were home with her. Lisa, Hailey, and Paige received multiple stab wounds. Lisa and Hailey died from their injures. Paige was able to escape the attack and seek help from a neighbor. She identified Thomas, whom she knew as “Pie,” as her attacker, telling police several times that night that, “Pie did this."

The murders and attempted murder occurred two weeks before the Scheetz were scheduled to testify against him in a sexual assault case. Hailey and her other sister, who was not home the night of the stabbing, had accused Thomas of molesting them in December 2013. Thomas was out on bail at the time of the stabbing.

Thomas was arrested a few hours after the stabbing. A trace of Hailey’s blood was found on Thomas’ shoes. He had attempted to eliminate any evidence connecting him to the crime by washing his clothes, sneakers, and hat in bleach. He also flushed latex gloves down the toilet. Thomas was freshly showered and asleep when police showed up at his home to arrest him. His clothes were still soaking in bleach.

Leeton Thomas' execution has been stayed by the US District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania, as he has not yet completed all of his appeals. Additionally, on Friday, February 13, 2015, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced a moratorium on executions in the state, until he received and reviewed a report on capital punishment in the state, a report which was ordered in 2011. In his announcement, he called the death penalty in Pennsylvania a "flawed system," "ineffective," "unjust," and “expensive." The report was concluded in June 2018, and upon review, Governor Wolf maintained the moratorium, stating that the report, which highlight several flaws in the capital punishment system, supports his decision. Pray for peace and healing for the family of Lisa and Hailey Scheetz. Pray for peace and healing for Paige, her sister, and all who were affected by Leeton’s crimes. Pray that if Leeton is innocent, lacks the competency to be executed, or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be provided prior to his execution. Pray that Leeton may come to find peace through a personal relationship in Jesus Christ, if he has not already.
