John Ramirez, Texas

John Henry Ramirez was scheduled to be executed on at 6 pm local time on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at the Wall Unit in the Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas.  John's execution has been called off by Judge Bobby Galvan of the 94th District Court in Corpus, Christi, Texas. Thirty-six-year-old John is convicted of the murder of 45-year-old Pablo Castro on July 19, 2004, in Corpus Christi, Texas. John has spent the last 11 years on Texas’ death row.

John graduation from high school and worked as a kitchen laborer prior to his arrest. He had previously been arrested for robbery, evading arrest, possession of marijuana, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

John Ramirez, Angela Rodriguez, and Christina Chavez spent several days using drugs in mid July 2004. On July 19, the three agreed to rob someone in order to obtain money for more drugs. After driving around, the group pulled into the Times Market in Corpus Christi, where they found Pablo Castro taking out the trash. Ramirez attacked Castro, stabbing him a total of 29 times with a six-inch serrated knife. After Castro fell to the ground, the group searched his pockets and stole a total of $1.25. The trio left and went on to commit another robbery, and attempted a third robbery.

Rodriguez and Chavez were apprehended soon after, while Ramirez was apprehended on February 20, 2008, near the Mexican border. Ramirez was sentenced to death on December 8, 2008.

 

Ramirez was previously scheduled to be executed in 2017, however his execution was stayed due to a request for a new lawyer.  His new execution date of September 9, 2020, has been called off by Judge Bobby Galvan of the 94th District Court in in Corpus Christi, Texas, following a Zoom hearing on Friday, August 14, 2020.  At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Galvan issued an oral order withdrawing the death warrant and cancelling the execution. 

 

Please pray for peace and healing for the family of Pablo Castro. Pleas pray for strength for the family of John Ramirez. Please pray that if John is innocent, lacks the competency to be executed, or should not be executed for any other reason, that evidence will be presented prior to the execution. Please pray that John may come to find peace through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, if he has not already
